      Ornamentation (music) In music, ornaments are notes which are added to the main notes of a piece of music in order to make it more interesting. There are several types of ornaments, including trills and slides. Music of the Renaissance and Baroque periods have lots of ornaments. On a few Carolingian books, bindings have simple stamped patterns on the leather. There was a fashion for stamped bindings in northern France in the later twelfth century, and bindings ornamented with little tools exist (but are unusual) from the thirteenth and fourteenth century. Then around the practice became much more common.
